Historian believes this phrase came into existence due to the Troy story in which Greeks used a wooden horse to enter into the city. The first record was Virgil’s Aeneid, Book 2:
“Do not trust the horse, Trojans. Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts.”
